The global tobacco epidemic is being driven by tobacco transnationals Philip Morris International, British American Tobacco and Japan Tobacco. These corporations have built empires that sacrifice the health and well-being of hundreds of millions of people.

In 2007 these three corporations had combined revenues of more than $147 billion, greater than the combined Gross Domestic Products of: Sri Lanka. El Salvador, Jordan, Ghana, Honduras, Paraguay, Uganda, Senegal, Georgia, Papua New Guinea and Palau.

Philip Morris International

In March 2008, Swiss-based Philip Morris International (PMI) spun off from U.S.-based Altria (parent corporation to Philip Morris USA). PMI is the world’s largest and most profitable tobacco transnational. PMI currently operates in 160 countries and holds about 15 percent of the international tobacco market. In 2007, PMI reported revenues (excluding taxes) of over $22 billion and operating profit of $8.9 billion.
