Yahoo News - Fast food giants urged to Value [the] Meal

Fast food industry leaders are "an aggressive, driving force in [the] epidemic of diet-related disease" and must take a more socially-responsible approach to business, says a corporate accountability watchdog launching a campaign to Value [the] Meal.

As researchers continue to uncover the severe health risks associated with poor nutrition, companies like McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's/Arby's, and Yum! Brands (KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell) should "stop aggressively marketing to children, blocking labeling laws, and interfering in public healthy policy," urges Corporate Accountability International's new U.S.-wide initiative.

There is a strong correlation between fast food and diet-related health conditions -- including asthma, cancer, diabetes, liver disease, and stroke -- in both children and adults, writes Corporate Accountability. Fast food giants' practices also degrade the environment and threaten the livelihoods of family farmers, and industry leaders regularly manipulate political processes to ensure their products remain cheap and widely available, adds the international watchdog.
